What kinds of units are available as rentals in Toronto and the GTA? 

There are a wide variety of residential and commercial rental units available. Residential properties include apartment rentals in low, mid, and high-rise buildings; condo rentals, apartment style and townhome style; house rentals; townhouse rentals; duplexes, triplexes or other multi-family houses; flats above stores or restaurants; and cottage rentals.

Not all properties are as good as they seem on paper or via a one-off tour though. Many people find rentals on their own and have good experiences, but, there are many others who move into their rentals with great expectations, only to find out later that the landlord isn’t reliable when it comes to repairs, snow removal or overall communication; the building the rental unit is housed in has very noisy neighbours, many criminals living in it or frequenting the building; it has frequent issues with bed bugs, cockroaches, rats or other pests; or the frequency of public transit vehicles coming close by is very low.

Having a full understanding of the neighbourhood, the history of the unit and the landlord before you sign a lease is the best route to take to avoid these types of problems.
