Oakville is an upscale town in Halton Region, which is part of the Greater Toronto Area. It is considered to be Ontario’s biggest town, with a population of 228,539 as of 2022. It sits nicely along beautiful Lake Ontario, between Mississauga and Burlington, with many parks to explore and beautiful lakefront views. It is a bedroom community for the affluent, also called a “Commuter Town,” with the highest percentage of high-income earners in Ontario.
As of 2016, 20.8% of employed Oakville residents made over $100,000 per year, compared to 9.2% of the total population of Ontario making that amount during the same year. This means area residents have a lot of buying power, which has contributed to the high price of real estate in this town.
Why so many high-income earners? Many Oakville residents work in executive level jobs at rich, downtown Toronto corporations. These jobs are easy to get to, taking only 30 minutes by car or 45 minutes by GO train.
With such high incomes in this city, it makes sense that Oakville would have a higher percentage of homeowners here than in other parts of the province. As of 2016, 82% of Oakville residents were homeowners, with 18% renting, compared to only 69% of Ontario residents owning their homes, and 31% renting.
Oakville also has a higher livability score than the rest of the province and all of Canada. The crime rate in Oakville is 56% lower than the national average, making it a one of the safest places to live and raise a family in Canada as well.

Oakville Neighbourhood Profile
Post-secondary students can attend the Sheridan College – Trafalgar Road Campus in Oakville, which offers 51 full-time programs including many in the arts, design and IT fields. Oakville also offers many public and Catholic primary and secondary schools, which tend to score higher than the national averages on student test results.
Oakville is a narrow city, with Lakeshore Rd running all across the lakefront side, Highway 403 running through its centre and Highway 407 surrounding its northern border. This makes it very easy to get around town and to travel outside of it as well.
Running parallel to Lakeshore Rd are train tracks, enabling residents to take the GO train or VIA rail to neighbouring cities, with the VIA Rail train linking to all VIA stations across Canada.
There is a lot do in Oakville for residents and tourists alike. Along with a beautiful lakefront trail, the city offers many public parks, including Lakeside Park, Esplanade Promenade, Lions Valley Park, and Oakville Tannery Park Public Beach. There are also several marinas and clubs across its harbourfront, including Bronte Harbour Yacht Club, Oakville Yacht Squadron and Oakville Power Boat Club. There is also a public boat dock available and access to the Oakville Lighthouse, a historic piece of architecture overlooking the lake.
