Markham was founded in the 1790s and has evolved dramatically over time. It carries a rich history that includes Markham Village, Unionville and Thornhill Village. It’s like several little towns in one city, each with their own unique character. Plus, there is a relatively new downtown centre and several areas of commercial properties, residential homes and condominiums built over the past 10 years, which offer a modern feel for those who prefer.

If you like golf, you will have several options to choose from including Angus Glen, Upper Unionville and Bushwood Golf Clubs; Markham Executive Golf Course; Remington Parkview Golf & Country Club; and two driving ranges.

Markham offers several shopping centres such as Pacific Mall at Kennedy and Steeles, and Markville Mall, which is conveniently located at Highway 7 and Markham Rd, and houses electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot. Each Mall includes many large chain stores and smaller vendors inside. You will also find several public libraries, an art gallery and several theatres in the city, so you and your family will have several options for indoor entertainment.

If you have school-aged children, you will have 66 different schools to choose from including public, Catholic, French-immersion and private. 

For transportation, Markham is well connected. There are several major highways and roads going through it and around it, including Highway 404, Highway 7 and the toll-based 407 highway, that quickly and easily connect drivers to neighbouring cities and outside of the GTA. 

There are many public transit options in the city as well. York Region Transit runs 40 routes throughout the city, many of which connect to other parts of York Region, and some to Toronto. If you work in Toronto or Richmond Hill, and don’t have time to take the bus, GO Transit offers fast, reliable, daily train service to get you there stress-free and on time.
